Abstract

Color is one of the important factors of painting. In addition to physical factors, color also affects psychology and physiology of vision. Prehistoric art also used the color to express the form of an object in the objective world about 30.000 years ago. Studies on color were started in 3rd century BC. The color study results have influenced the methodology as well as artistic trends. The paper focuses on the history of color study until the 19th century and influences of color theory on the artistic trends of European painters from late 19th to early 20th century. Thereby, we understand how science affects art. These experiences can help us shape our approach in the digital age.
