APPROACHING SYMBOLS ON THE COSTUMES OF MONG PEOPLE IN LAOCAI FROM SYMBOLISM THEORY
Abstract
Pattern is an important element that creates the value of costumes and affirms the thinking, affection, skillful hands, creativity, aesthetics of the community, a generation of struggle and survival. or more broadly, it is the “slice” of a culture. Discovering pattern symbols on the costumes of Mong people can not be a simple search. It is needed a long term and proper approach to look for the true meanings of the pattern symbols. To access patterns on the costumes of Mong people, the author applies the symbolism theory to identify the technical issues, aesthetics, values, and meaning of the patterns. Accessing patterns on the costumes of Mong people “is one way to find out not only human being, but also to explain the world in the deepest layer,” as the voice of Leslie A. White. Within the framework of an article, the author's effort is just the beginning, laid the foundation for further studies.
