VIETNAMESE PAINTING ‑ PATHWAYS OF EXCHANGE AND INTERACTION WITH GLOBAL ART
Abstract
Vietnamese painting constitutes an essential component of the nation's artistic heritage, reflecting continuous
transformation across historical periods. From traditional folk paintings (Dong Ho, Hang Trong, Kim Hoang)
to the introduction and influence of Western art, Vietnamese painting has evolved through dynamic processes of
adaptation and innovation. Particularly since the late 20th century, Vietnam's contemporary art scene has
expanded rapidly, embracing diverse forms such as expressionism, abstraction, installation, performance, and
digital art. In the context of global integration, Vietnamese artists have gained greater access to international
trends while navigating the challenge of maintaining national identity amid creative experimentation. Despite
notable achievements, Vietnamese painting still requires long‑term strategic development to strengthen its
presence and competitiveness within the global art market.
