Gender inequality in the Cham Muslims’ family decisions in Southwestern region of Vietnam
Abstract
Based on qualitative research data and updated data of population and houses census dated April 1, 2019, this article systematically analyzes gender relations within the families of Cham Muslims (Islam) in the Southwestern region of Vietnam. It clarifies the foundations that establish the roles and status of Cham Muslim women in family life, considering aspects such as production activities, customs, and Islamic law. The study specifies the factors contributing to gender inequality within Cham Muslim families in the Southwestern region, focusing on marriage decisions, labor division within the family, and participation in family decision-making. The findings indicate significant changes in decision-making power within Cham Muslim families in this region, contributing to a more open trend towards gender concepts and gender equality in Cham Muslim society in the Southwestern region.
