Abstract

Thanh Ha Commercial Port, and then the Bao Vinh Old Quarter, was notable result
of the Nguyen Lords’ decision to establish Hue as the capital of Dang Trong in the 17th
century and especially from the Nguyen Lords’ implementation of a policy of prioritizing
foreign trade to stimulate economic development, aiming to transform Dang Trong into a
real counterbalance to Dang Ngoai. The economic growth under the Nguyen Lords fostered
rich cultural exchanges, particularly in the economic and cultural relations between
Vietnam and China. The article approaches the development from Thanh Ha port to Bao
Vinh ancient town through the practice of worshiping Guan Gong from the perspective of
cultural contact and acculturation, aiming to contribute to understanding a unique cultural
historical period in Hue, contributing to recognizing Guan Gong worship in Hue today as
a unique product of the process of cultural contact, exchange and acculturation in Dang
Trong in particular, and the whole Southern Region of Vietnam in general
