Fishing efficiency of using Furuno 360-degree sonar on offshore purse seine vessels in Ninh Thuan Province
Abstract
To evaluate the role of the Furuno 360-degree sonar in offshore purse seine fishing in Ninh Thuan, the author has studied 13 fishing vessels equipped with the device and 13 vessels without it for comparison. Based on survey results, descriptive analysis was conducted, and a comparison of the means of two factors with different variances was performed at a 95% confidence level.
The results showed that vessels equipped with the Furuno 360-degree sonar reduced the time required for each fishing operation and increased the number of hauls per day compared to vessels without the device. Notably, the CPUE of vessels with the Furuno 360-degree sonar increased by approximately 41% compared to those without it. All captains confirmed an increase in CPUE after installing and using the device. Among them, only 23% of captains utilized the advanced features of the sonar, leading to a CPUE increase of about 46% compared to those who only used its basic functions.
