Abstract

This article presents results of identification of mantis shrimp collected in six districts, including Binh Đai, Ba Tri and Thanh Phu (Ben Tre Province) and Nam Can, Ngoc Hien, Tran Van Thoi (Ca Mau Province). A total of 68 speciments, including 30 specimens of the most cultured species (including 5 specimens of cultured mantis in Ca Mau and 25 specimens caught from the wild in Ben Tre and Ca Mau province) and 38 specimens of other species (including 4 specimens collected from the cultured systems and 34 specimens from the wild of Ben Tre and Ca Mau Province) collected for taxonomy. All collected specimens were alive, unscratched, unloosed appendages. The shrimp was transported lively to Nha Trang and identified by morphology and biomolecular method at Reseach Institute for Aquaculture No.3. Results of morphology identification found 6 different species, including Clorida decorata Wood-Mason, 1875, Dictyosquilla foveolata (Wood-Mason, 1895), Harpiosquilla harpax (de Han, 1844), Harpiosquilla raphidea (Fabricius, 1798), Miyakea nepa (Latreille in Latreille, Le Peletier, Serville & Guérin, 1828) and Oratosquillina interrupta (Kemp, 1911). Except M. nepa, the other five species were confirmed by Bio-molecular identification. The most cultured and fast growing mantis in Ca Mau is H. raphidae while the species that has been studied on artificial breeding in Viet Nam is H. harpax. All species were found in the six surveyed districts.
