Abstract

The political and diplomatic relations between France and Russia from 2000 to 2014 unfolded against a backdrop of profound global changes following the Cold War, as Russia sought to restore its status as a great power and France strived to maintain its independent role in the European and global security structure. Under Presidents Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy, France was one of the Western nations advocating for dialogue and cooperation with Russia, viewing Russia as a strategic partner on many international issues. Both sides maintained annual high-level meetings, organized political and security dialogues, and participated together in numerous multilateral forums. The period from 2000 to 2014 saw the continuation of a long tradition of bilateral dialogue while simultaneously reflecting the profound shifts in the post-Cold War international order.
