Fifty years of Vietnam - Nepal relations (1975 - 2025): From solidarity within the Non-Aligned Movement to multilateral partnership

Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing Vietnam - Nepal relations with the broader trajectory of multilateral diplomacy over the past half-century (1975 - 2025). Drawing on theoretical perspectives concerning the role of multilateral institutions in norm-setting and safeguarding the interests of small and medium-sized states, the article highlights convergences in the foreign policy orientations of the two countries, rooted in the Bandung Spirit and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The findings demonstrate that Vietnam and Nepal have progressed bayond on traditional bilateral ties to act as active participants in the construction of a rules-based international order. Furthermore, their shared vision reflects a commitment to building a resilient multilateral that upholds national autonomy while promoting sustainable development in a multipolar and turbulent world.
