Abstract

This study investigates the impact of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) on the
development of communicative skills among non-English major freshmen at a Vietnamese university.
Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates quantitative surveys, semi-structured
interviews, and classroom observations to provide a comprehensive understanding of students’ engagement
with mobile learning technologies. Results reveal that frequent use of mobile applications such as ELSA
Speak and Duolingo significantly enhances students’ speaking fluency, pronunciation accuracy, and
listening comprehension. Furthermore, MALL promotes learner autonomy and motivation by offering
flexible, gamified, and personalized learning experiences outside the traditional classroom. Despite
these benefits, challenges including technical limitations, lack of teacher training, and distractions were
identified. The study concludes with recommendations for effective integration of MALL into English
language curricula in Vietnamese higher education institutions.
