Abstract

This study aims to investigate university students’ perceptions of the impacts of social media
on their academic performance. Data were systematically gathered through a custom-developed survey
instrument during the 2023/2024 academic cycle, with the research conducted at the International School
within Vietnam National University (VNU-IS). The sample size was 100 students of different ages and
genders. The results indicate that while many students recognize the distracting nature of social media,
some also believe that it can enhance their learning by providing increased accessibility to educational
content. The study emphasizes the benefits of utilizing social media based on student feedback, such as
supporting research, improving communication, and positively impacting Grade Point Average (GPA),
while also shedding light on the drawbacks. Its mechanisms, such as distractions, can diminish study time
and academic performance. All in all, this study offers valuable insights into the intricate relationship
between social media and academic performance as perceived by students themselves.
