CHALLENGES IN TEACHING ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES AT UNIVERSITIES IN HO CHI MINH CITY
Tóm tắt
In response to Vietnam’s growing demand for industry-relevant education, English for Specific
Purposes (ESP) has become a priority in tertiary instruction. This study investigates the key challenges
in teaching ESP at universities in Ho Chi Minh City from both teacher and student perspectives. Using
a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews with five instructors and focus group
discussions with twelve students. Findings highlight four primary challenges: the lack of systematic needs
analysis, limited subject-matter knowledge among instructors, insufficient localization of materials, and
varied student proficiency levels. These factors contribute to a mismatch between ESP program goals
and classroom practices. To improve implementation, the study recommends targeted teacher training,
interdisciplinary collaboration, development of localized materials, and differentiated teaching strategies.
The research offers practical insights into current ESP instruction and suggests solutions to enhance its
effectiveness within Vietnam’s higher education context.
