Abstract

This paper aimed to identify the reiteration of lexical coherent devices used by American President Barack Hussein Obama in his July 2015 speech. The findings of the study revealed that he used lexical reiteration with repetition, synonymy, antonymy, and superordinate components frequently. By utilizing those cohesive devices, such an outstanding leader could make his speech more powerful. The results show that these lexical coherent devices have discourse value, allowing them to be employed as a tool for social engagement with the purpose of influencing the country. By analyzing lexical coherent devices in the speech, the researcher produces several implications in the process of teaching related subjects such as lexicology and discourse analysis.
