FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING STRATEGIES IN CHINESE TEACHING PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS AT HO CHI MINH CITY UNIVERSITY OF INDUSTRY AND TRADE
Abstract
The article presents proposals for applying foreign language learning strategies to the Chinese
language teaching program for students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade. Based
on the theory of foreign language learning strategies of Oxford (1990) and collecting previous domestic
and foreign studies, the author proposes the application of learning strategies to the Chinese language
teaching program for students to promote autonomy in learning, improve learning outcomes, and raise
awareness in learning among these students. The application proposals are given in the form of actions,
activities, and remedial measures interspersed into the existing curriculum based on Oxford’s foreign
language learning strategy groups (1990) to increase the initiative in applying learning strategies for
students and at the same time help students realize the application of learning strategies as a mandatory
principle repeated throughout their Chinese learning process. In addition, this proposal not only applies
to students at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade but can also be applied to students of
other universities in Ho Chi Minh City who are studying Chinese.
