Abstract

This critical report evaluates the Reading section of English File Intermediate Plus using
McDonough and Shaw’s (2003) evaluation checklist. The analysis identifies key strengths including
authenticity, appropriate vocabulary density, schema-based, text-driven, and task-based approaches.
However, critical weaknesses such as cultural stereotyping and potential bias are also discussed.
Recommendations for minimizing cultural insensitivity and enhancing learners’ engagement and
comprehension are provided to inform future instructional practices.
