DISJUNCTS IN ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE

Abstract

The study aims to make a comparative study of disjuncts in English and Vietnamese in
terms of forms, positions, contents and functions. Disjuncts in both language systems are considered
morphologically, syntactically, semantically and pragmatically to find out the similarities and differences.
It is revealed that although English and Vietnamese disjuncts share a few similarities in terms of four
above-mentioned aspects, there still exist certain disparities. It is hoped that this paper will help language
learners have certain knowledge about disjuncts in two language systems as well as avoid some errors
when translating these linguistic devices as well as in comprehension.
