Abstract

This study investigates how to receive compliments in Japanese from a pragmatic and cultural
perspective. Japanese people often do not receive compliments directly but choose to humbly deny, pass
on compliments to others or avoid them, in order to maintain harmony in communication. Compared to
Vietnamese, both languages value humility, but Japanese has a more normative system of expressions.
The study contributes to explaining the relationship between Japanese language and culture, and at the
same time provides suggestions for Japanese learners in communication
