Journal of Tropical Science and Engineering (JTSE) is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by the Joint Vietnam–Russia Tropical Science and Technology Research Center. The journal serves as a global platform for the dissemination of high-quality scientific and engineering research related to tropical, subtropical, and comparable extreme environments worldwide.

JTSE publishes original research that advances fundamental understanding, methodological innovation, and applied solutions in science and engineering, with relevance extending beyond specific geographic or institutional contexts.

JTSE operates in accordance with Vietnamese regulations on the press and scientific publishing and is officially authorized under the Press Operation License No. 02/GP-BVHTTDL, dated January 16, 2026, issued by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam.

I. ABOUT US

1. Aims and scope

Journal of Tropical Science and Engineering (JTSE) aims to promote interdisciplinary research that addresses scientific, technological, and environmental challenges associated with tropical and extreme environments. The journal welcomes contributions from researchers worldwide and evaluates all submissions solely on the basis of scientific quality, originality, and relevance.

In particular, JTSE emphasizes integrative, field-based, and problem-oriented studies that link fundamental scientific understanding with practical solutions for ecosystem sustainability, environmental resilience, and human well-being in tropical regions.

The scope of the journal includes, but is not limited to, the following areas:

Ecology and Environmental Sciences (Primary Focus)

- Tropical ecology and biodiversity;

- Mechanisms and governing principles of the formation, dynamics, and development of tropical landscapes and ecosystems;

- Tropical natural resources and the environment;

- Integrated management and sustainable use of natural and human-modified landscapes and ecosystems;

- Novel methods and technologies for the restoration of tropical forest and marine ecosystems;

- Landscape studies in relation to sustainable development of agriculture, forestry, tourism, and conservation;

- Climate change and ecological security;

- Microorganisms and their applications in environmental protection;

- Dioxin and other environmental pollutants originating from war legacy and anthropogenic activities.

Studies based on field observations, experimental approaches, or theoretical frameworks are welcome, provided that they contribute to broader ecological understanding beyond local case studies.

Chemistry and Materials Sciences (Secondary Focus)

- Corrosion, ageing, and biodeterioration of materials and engineering systems in tropical environments, and prediction of their service life; basic and applied chemistry.

- Research on solutions, technologies, and materials (including protective coatings) to enhance durability, service life, and operational performance of materials and technical equipment under tropical conditions;

- Research, development, and application of novel materials and advanced technologies in specialized and high-performance fields.

Interdisciplinary studies that integrate materials science with environmental, biological, or ecological perspectives are particularly encouraged.

 Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences (Complementary Focus)

- Environmental toxicology and human health risk assessment;

- Occupational environment and occupational health;

- Epidemiology and infectious diseases; Tropical diseases affecting humans, animals, and plants.

- Development and application of products, technologies, and techniques for surveillance, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases;

- Bioactive compounds, pharmaceuticals, functional foods, and their applications in disease prevention and treatment;

- Biotechnology and the development and application of advanced biotechnological products, technologies, and techniques.

Submissions should emphasize mechanistic understanding or innovative approaches, rather than purely clinical or descriptive studies.

Overall, JTSE particularly encourages interdisciplinary studies that bridge ecology, environmental sciences, materials science, and biomedical research to address complex challenges in tropical and extreme environments, with clear international relevance and rigorous scientific methodology.

II. Open Access Policy

JTSE is a fully open-access journal, providing immediate and free access to all published content.

All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license.

Readers are permitted to read, download, copy, distribute, and reuse published material with appropriate citation.

III. Digital Preservation

JTSE ensures long-term digital preservation and sustainable accessibility of its published content through the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN), operated by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP).

JTSE has activated PKP PN within its Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. Through this network, published articles are permanently archived in a distributed preservation system, ensuring content integrity, redundancy, and continued accessibility in the event of data loss, system failure, or journal discontinuation.

This preservation approach aligns with international best practices in scholarly publishing and meets the long-term archiving requirements of major open-access evaluation and indexing services.

B. FOR AUTHORS

I. Submission Guidelines

1. General Information

Journal of Tropical Science and Engineering (JTSE) is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal. The journal welcomes submissions from researchers worldwide and evaluates all manuscripts solely on the basis of scientific merit, originality, and relevance to the journal’s scope.

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year.

2. Article Types

JTSE accepts the following types of manuscripts:

2.1. Original Research Articles

- Report novel and significant research findings

- Must present clear objectives, sound methodology, and robust analysis

2.2. Review Articles

- Provide critical and comprehensive overviews of recent advances

- Should identify research gaps and future directions

- Systematic or narrative reviews are both acceptable when clearly justified

2.3. Short Communications

- Concise reports of preliminary or innovative results

- Limited in length but held to the same scientific standards

2.4. Special Issue Contributions

- Submitted in response to a specific Call for Papers

- Subject to the same peer-review standards as regular submissions

3. Language and Style

- The official language of publication is English.

- Manuscripts must be written in clear, scholarly English suitable for an international audience.

- Authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to seek professional language editing prior to submission.

 

C. JOURNAL POLICIES

I. Publication Ethics & Malpractice

1. Ethical Standards and Principles

Journal of Tropical Science and Engineering (JTSE) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of publication ethics and scholarly integrity. The journal adheres to internationally recognized ethical guidelines and best practices in academic publishing.

JTSE follows the principles and recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and expects all parties involved in the publication process-authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher-to uphold these standards.

2. Responsibilities of Authors

2.1. Authorship and Contribution

Authorship should be limited to individuals who have made substantial scholarly contributions to:

- The conception or design of the work;

- Data acquisition, analysis, or interpretation;

- Drafting or critically revising the manuscript;

- Approval of the final version for publication.

All listed authors must agree on the order of authorship and take collective responsibility for the content of the manuscript.

2.2. Originality and Plagiarism

 Authors must ensure that:

- Submitted manuscripts are original and have not been published elsewhere;

- All sources are appropriately cited;

- Any form of plagiarism, including self-plagiarism or redundant publication, is strictly avoided.

Manuscripts may be screened for plagiarism using appropriate tools.

2.3. Data Integrity and Reproducibility

Authors are responsible for:

- The accuracy and integrity of the data presented;

- Ensuring that data have not been fabricated, falsified, or inappropriately manipulated;

- Retaining original data and making them available upon reasonable request.

2.4. Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication

Authors should not submit the same manuscript simultaneously to more than one journal or publish substantially similar work in multiple venues without proper disclosure and justification.

2.5. Disclosure of Conflicts of Interest

All authors must disclose any financial or non-financial conflicts of interest that could influence the interpretation of the research. If no conflicts exist, authors should explicitly state this.

2.6. Ethical Approval for Research Involving Humans or Animals

Research involving human participants or animals must:

- Comply with relevant institutional, national, and international ethical regulations;

- Include a clear statement of ethical approval and informed consent where applicable.

3. Responsibilities of Editors

Editors are responsible for:

- Making publication decisions based solely on the scientific merit of the manuscript;

- Ensuring a fair, unbiased, and timely peer-review process;

- Maintaining confidentiality of submitted manuscripts;

- Managing conflicts of interest and recusing themselves when necessary.

Editorial decisions are independent of the journal’s publisher or sponsoring institution.

4. Responsibilities of Reviewers

Reviewers are expected to:

- Provide objective, constructive, and timely evaluations;

- Maintain confidentiality of the manuscripts under review;

- Declare any conflicts of interest that could affect their impartiality;

- Refrain from using unpublished material for personal advantage.

Peer review is considered a scholarly contribution performed on a voluntary basis.

5. Peer Review Integrity

JTSE operates a double-blind peer review system to ensure impartial evaluation.

- At least two independent reviewers are assigned to each manuscript;

- Editorial decisions are based on reviewers’ reports and editorial judgment;

- All submissions, including those from the publisher’s own institution, are treated equally under the same review standards

6. Handling of Misconduct and Ethical Complaints

6.1. Allegations of Misconduct

Allegations of research or publication misconduct may include, but are not limited to:

- Plagiarism;

- Data fabrication or falsification;

- Inappropriate authorship practices;

- Undisclosed conflicts of interest.

6.2. Investigation Procedures

When misconduct is suspected:

- The editorial office will conduct a preliminary assessment;

- Authors may be contacted for clarification or explanation;

- If necessary, the matter will be escalated following COPE guidelines;

- Appropriate actions will be taken based on the findings.

6.3. Corrections, Retractions, and Expressions of Concern

JTSE may issue:

- Corrections for minor errors that do not invalidate the findings;

- Retractions for serious ethical breaches or unreliable results;

- Expressions of concern when investigations are ongoing.

All such notices will be clearly linked to the original article.

7. Ethical Oversight of Sponsored or Funded Research

The source of funding must be clearly disclosed. Funding organizations must not influence:

- Study design;

- Data analysis;

- Editorial decisions;

- Interpretation or reporting of results.

8. Open Access Ethics

As a fully open-access journal, JTSE ensures that:

- Editorial decisions are not influenced by financial considerations;

- No article processing charges (APC) are imposed on authors;

- All content is published under transparent licensing terms.

9. Compliance with International Indexing Standards

This publication ethics policy is designed to comply with the ethical requirements of major international indexing and evaluation systems, including:

- DOAJ

- Scopus.

10. Updates to the Ethics Policy

JTSE reserves the right to revise and update this ethics policy as needed to reflect changes in international standards and best practices.

 II. Peer Review Policy

1. Overview

Journal of Tropical Science and Engineering (JTSE) applies a rigorous, transparent, and independent peer-review process to ensure the scientific quality, originality, and integrity of all published articles.

The journal follows internationally recognized best practices in scholarly peer review and publication ethics, in accordance with the principles of
Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

2. Type of Peer Review

JTSE operates a double-blind peer review system:

- Authors’ identities are concealed from reviewers;

- Reviewers’ identities are concealed from authors;

- Manuscripts are anonymized prior to review.

This model is used to minimize potential bias and ensure objective evaluation.

3. Review Process

3.1. Initial Editorial Screening

- The Editorial Office checks submissions for scope, formatting, and basic ethical compliance.

- Manuscripts failing to meet these requirements may be returned to authors without external review.

3.2. Reviewer Assignment

- Each manuscript is assigned to at least two independent reviewers with relevant expertise.

- Reviewers are selected based on subject knowledge, publication record, and absence of conflicts of interest

3.3. Peer Review Evaluation

- Reviewers assess the manuscript according to scientific quality, originality, methodological rigor, and relevance.

- Constructive and evidence-based feedback is required.

3.4. Editorial Decision

- Editorial decisions are based on reviewers’ reports and the editor’s academic judgment.

- Possible decisions include: Accept, Minor Revision, Major Revision, or Reject.

3.5. Revision and Final Decision

- Authors must respond to all reviewer comments point-by-point.

- Revised manuscripts may be sent for additional review if necessary.

4. Review Timeline

JTSE strives to ensure a timely and efficient review process.

Indicative timelines are communicated transparently to authors; however, review duration may vary depending on reviewer availability and manuscript complexity.

5. Editorial Independence and Fairness

- All manuscripts are evaluated solely on scientific merit.

- Submissions from authors affiliated with the journal’s publisher or host institution are subject to the same peer-review standards as all other submissions.

- Editorial decisions are independent of financial or institutional considerations.

6. Confidentiality

All submitted manuscripts and review reports are treated as confidential documents.
Reviewers and editors must not disclose or use unpublished material for personal advantage.

7. Ethical Oversight

Concerns regarding ethical issues, conflicts of interest, or research misconduct arising during peer review are handled in accordance with JTSE’s Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement and COPE guidelines.

8. Transparency and Compliance

This peer-review policy is designed to comply with the evaluation criteria of international indexing and open-access platforms, including:

III. Reviewer Guidelines

1. Role of Reviewers

Peer reviewers play a critical role in maintaining the scientific quality and credibility of JTSE. Reviewers contribute their expertise on a voluntary and scholarly basis, supporting the advancement of science and engineering research.

2. Reviewer Responsibilities

Reviewers are expected to:

- Provide objective, constructive, and timely evaluations;

- Assess manuscripts based on scientific merit, not personal opinion or institutional affiliation;

- Maintain confidentiality throughout the review process;

- Declare any potential conflicts of interest promptly.

3. Evaluation Criteria

When reviewing a manuscript, reviewers should consider:

3.1. Scientific Quality

- Soundness of methodology and experimental design

- Appropriateness of data analysis and interpretation

3.2. Originality and Contribution

- Novelty of the research question or approach

- Contribution to existing knowledge in the field

3.3. Relevance and Scope

- Relevance to the journal’s aims and scope

- International or transferable scientific significance

3.4. Presentation and Clarity

- Logical organization and clarity of writing

- Adequacy of figures, tables, and references

4. Reviewer Reports

Reviewer reports should:

- Be clear, respectful, and professional in tone;

- Provide specific, actionable comments for authors;

- Distinguish between major issues and minor suggestions;

- Avoid personal criticism.

Confidential comments to the editor should be clearly identified.

5. Confidentiality and Ethics

Reviewers must not:

- Share manuscripts or review content with third parties;

- Use unpublished data or ideas for personal research advantage.

Any suspicion of plagiarism, data manipulation, or ethical misconduct should be reported to the editor.

6. Conflicts of Interest

Reviewers should decline review invitations if they have:

- Financial, professional, or personal relationships with the authors;

- Competitive or collaborative interests that may affect impartiality.

7. Timeliness

Reviewers are encouraged to:

- Accept review invitations only when able to meet the requested deadline;

- Inform the editorial office promptly if delays are unavoidable.

8. Recognition of Reviewers

JTSE recognizes reviewers’ contributions through:

- Official letters of acknowledgement;

- Reviewer certificates;

- Annual public acknowledgement of reviewers (without linking names to specific manuscripts).

9. Ethical Framework

These reviewer guidelines align with the ethical principles of
Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
and international standards for responsible peer review.

IV. Appeals & Complaints Policy

Complaints concerning editorial misconduct, ethical issues, or procedural irregularities will be handled in accordance with the Journal’s Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement and the COPE guidelines. JTSE aims to resolve complaints in a timely, fair, and confidential manner.

1. Complaints

All appeals are reviewed by the Editor-in-Chief or, where appropriate, by an independent senior editor not previously involved in the decision. The outcome of the appeal will be communicated in writing, and the decision after appeal is final.

- Appeals based solely on disagreement with reviewers’ opinions or editorial judgment, without substantive justification, will not be considered.

- Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Journal’s Editorial Office within 30 days of the decision and must clearly address the specific points of concern.

- Authors may submit a formal appeal if they believe that a decision was based on a factual misunderstanding, procedural error, or demonstrable bias

2. Appeals

Journal of Tropical Science and Engineering (JTSE) is committed to a fair, transparent, and accountable editorial process. Authors have the right to appeal editorial decisions or submit complaints regarding editorial handling, peer review, or ethical concerns.

V. Preprint policy

JTSE supports the rapid dissemination of scientific knowledge and allows the submission of manuscripts that have previously been made available as preprints on recognized, non-commercial preprint servers (e.g., arXiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv).

The presence of a preprint does not affect the peer review process or editorial decision-making. All submissions are evaluated solely on their scientific merit, originality, and relevance to the journal’s scope.

Manuscripts previously posted as preprints are considered for publication provided that:

 - The preprint version is clearly disclosed at the time of submission;

- The manuscript has not been formally peer-reviewed or published in a peer-reviewed journal;

- Any substantial differences between the preprint and the submitted manuscript are appropriately addressed and explained.

Upon acceptance, authors are encouraged to update the preprint record by adding a link to the final published version of the article.

VI. Data Availability Policy

JTSE does not mandate open data in all cases; however, authors remain responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and accessibility of data necessary to support the conclusions of their research.

- When data cannot be shared openly, authors must provide a justified explanation within the Data Availability Statement.

- All manuscripts must include a Data Availability Statement, clearly indicating whether data are publicly available, available upon request, or subject to ethical, legal, or confidentiality restrictions.

- Authors are encouraged to make underlying research data, materials, and analytical methods available whenever possible, either through recognized data repositories or upon reasonable request.

JTSE encourages transparency, reproducibility, and responsible data sharing in scientific research.

VII. Generative AI (GenAI) Policy

This policy applies to all contributors to the Journal of Tropical Science and Engineering, including authors, reviewers, and editors.

1. General principles

1.1. The use of Generative AI (GenAI) must adhere to the following principles: integrity in research, transparency, clear disclosure, and compliance with established ethical standards.

1.2. GenAI shall be used solely as a supporting tool for enhancing language quality, readability, idea development, and information retrieval. It must not substitute human reasoning, analysis, or conclusions, nor the professional, ethical, or legal responsibilities of authors, peer reviewers, or editors. GenAI shall not be acknowledged as a co-author.

1.3. All content generated or modified by GenAI must be traceable, transparently disclosed, and remain under the ultimate responsibility of a human. Any citations, data, or images suggested by GenAI shall be accepted only after the author has verified their accuracy and sources.

1.4. The use of GenAI in publication must comply with the Journal’s policies on confidentiality, privacy, and copyright, adhere to relevant legal regulations, ensure transparency, and avoid any infringement of third-party intellectual property rights.

2. Regulations for Authors

2.1. Authors are responsible for the originality, validity, and integrity of the manuscript. When using GenAI, authors must oversee and take full responsibility for the content, including verifying the accuracy, completeness, and potential bias of the information or assessments generated by GenAI.

2.2. GenAI shall not be used to fabricate research data or results, manipulate original data, or generate unverifiable references.

2.3. Authors must not use GenAI to create, replace, or modify images, figures, maps, tables, equations, or illustrative materials. This prohibition includes any enhancement, obscuring, moving, deleting, or adding of details. Adjustments to brightness, contrast, or color balance are acceptable only if they do not obscure, remove, or distort any information from the original image.

2.4. Conceptual or schematic illustrations may be generated with GenAI, provided that:

(a) The tool and purpose are clearly declared;

(b) Such illustrations are labeled “AI-generated illustration”;

(c) They do not replace or simulate experimental data. Authors must retain original drafts and source, and provide them to the Editorial Board upon request.

2.5. The use of Generative AI (GenAI) must be disclosed in two places: within the dedicated field of the submission system and in the manuscript's “Statement on the Use of Generative AI (GenAI)” section.

Note:   The Journal requires that all submitted manuscripts include a declaration on whether generative AI (GenAI) tools were used or not. This declaration must be placed following the “Acknowledgements” section, written in italics.  Authors must select one of the following three statements, in accordance with their actual use:

* No AI Used: The authors affirm that no generative AI tools were used to create or modify the scientific content of this manuscript. All analyses, interpretations, and conclusions are entirely the work of the authors.

* Limited AI Use: The authors declare that Generative AI tools were not used to generate or edit the scientific content of this manuscript. Where AI tools were employed (grammar checking/formatting only), the authors have verified all content and take full responsibility for the final version.

* Language-Editing AI Use: The authors declare that AI tools were used only for language editing/formatting, and not for generating scientific content. All data, analyses, and interpretations were performed and verified by the authors, who take full responsibility for the manuscript.

2.6. The Editor-in-Chief has the final decision to determine whether the use of GenAI in a submitted or published manuscript is appropriate or permissible. In cases of violation or failure to disclose GenAI use, the Editor-in-Chief may request an explanation or correction or can reject the manuscript, initiate an ethical investigation, or retract the article in accordance with the Journal’s policies

3. Regulations for Reviewers and Editors

3.1. Reviewers and editors can use GenAI as a technical support tool, for example, to check or refine the grammar of their own writing, to use licensed plagiarism detection software in accordance with confidentiality principles, or to improve the clarity of their written feedback in review reports, provided that such use does not involve any content from the manuscript under review.

3.2. Reviewers and editors cannot use GenAI to conduct the manuscript evaluation process, generate review reports automatically, or make decisions regarding the acceptance or rejection of manuscripts.

3.3. Reviewers and editors must not, under any circumstances, upload a manuscript or any part of it, including images, to a GenAI system, as this may violate data confidentiality, authors’ ownership rights, and cause other potential risks. This restriction also applies to reviewers’ evaluation reports.

3.4. When detecting any suspected inappropriate use of GenAI in a manuscript, reviewers must report it to the editor.

3.5. The editor is responsible for identifying potential GenAI policy violations based on author disclosures or reviewer reports. Any such case must be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief, whose decision is final.

4. Policy for handling violations

4.1. If a violation is suspected, the Editorial Board will require the author(s) to provide a written explanation within 14 working days.

4.2. If the explanation is not satisfactory, the Editorial Board conducts an internal investigation within 30 days, which may involve independent experts. During this process, the Board may ask the author(s) to provide original drafts, GenAI usage logs (prompt logs), or source files.

4.3. The investigation report shall be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief, who will determine the appropriate action, which may include:

+ Requesting corrections or additional disclosures;

+ Publishing a corrigendum;

+ Rejecting the manuscript; Retracting a published article.

4.4. The final decision will be formally notified to the author(s) and their governing institution. Authors retain the right to appeal this decision within 15 calendar days of receiving the formal notification. The Journal may also publish the outcome on its website.

5. Confidentiality, Copyright, and Legal Requirements

Authors must ensure that any GenAI-assisted content complies with all applicable intellectual property and copyright laws. Furthermore, when using third-party GenAI tools, authors are responsible for adhering to the service's terms of use and must not input sensitive or personal information. Any breach of these rules constitutes grounds for the manuscript's rejection or retraction.

VIII. ORCID Policy

Journal of Tropical Science and Engineering (JTSE) supports the use of the Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) to uniquely identify authors and to enhance the transparency, accuracy, and integrity of scholarly communication.

- When provided, ORCID iDs will be published alongside author names and affiliations and used for metadata dissemination and indexing.

- At minimum, the Corresponding Author is encouraged to provide a valid ORCID iD at the time of submission.

- Authors are strongly encouraged to register for an ORCID iD and to provide it during manuscript submission.

ORCID registration is free of charge at https://orcid.org. JTSE does not require ORCID as a condition for submission or publication, but its use is highly recommended.

IX. Editorial Conflict of Interest Policy

Editorial decisions are based solely on scientific merit, originality, and relevance to the journal’s scope, and are independent of institutional affiliation or publisher interests.

- The Editor-in-Chief will ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent real or perceived conflicts of interest.

- Such manuscripts will be handled by an independent editor with no conflict of interest, and the peer review process will follow the same double-blind standards applied to all other submissions.

- Editors or editorial board members who are authors or co-authors of a submitted manuscript shall not be involved at any stage in the editorial decision-making process for that manuscript.

To preserve editorial independence and integrity, JTSE applies strict safeguards when manuscripts are submitted by editors, editorial board members, or individuals affiliated with the publisher.
