Abstract
This article presents an in-depth study of the diverse sets of chings (ching) within the cultural life of the Xơ Đăng people, an indigenous group residing on the eastern slopes of the majestic Trường Sơn mountain range in northwestern Quảng Ngãi province. We will examine the following: the three-piece ching set; the four-piece can ching set; the six-piece năng ching set; the seven-piece ching set; the h’lênh ching set (with configurations ranging from 8 to 15 pieces); and a number of Xơ Đăng ching compositions. This study will address organological issues, including the scientific parameters concerning the shape and size of each ching set; the nomenclature of each ching within the sets; as well as the function, performance environment, and repertoire of ching in the life of the Xơ Đăng community.
