Abstract

La Bohème stands as one of Giacomo Puccini’s most cherished and frequently performed operas. This four-act work narrates the tale of a young writer named Rodolfo and a delicate seamstress named Mimì, set against the backdrop of 1830s Paris. Each act illustrates a distinct stage in the romantic relationship between Rodolfo and Mimì, while also highlighting the struggles of four impoverished artists: Rodolfo, Marcello, Schaunard, and Colline. The libretto, crafted by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, draws inspiration from Henri Murger’s novel Scènes de la Vie de Bohème (The Lives of the Wanderers). The opera made its debut at the Teatro Regio in Turin, Italy, on February 1st, 1896. The work has been
renowned for both its poignant narrative and its vibrant, intricate music. This article will explore La Bohème through various lenses, including historical context, structural elements, melody, harmony, orchestration, and the function of music in character development.
