Abstract

The relationship between cultural heritage preservation and tourism development often appears conflicting, especially in the daily lives of local communities. There have been many real-world lessons demonstrating that cultural assimilation and commercial trends have negative impacts, leading to adverse shifts in awareness and behavior regarding the preservation of traditional values, customs, and lifestyles. So, how can the exploitation of cultural heritage in community tourism be viewed in a positive light? This article presents some experiences in leveraging cultural heritage for community tourism development in several Southeast Asian countries for Vietnam to consider.
