Abstract

The cult of An Duong Vuong - the founding monarch of the ancient state of Au Lac - represents a distinctive cultural phenomenon, encapsulating both the historical memory and the Vietnamese ethos of “drinking water, remembering the source”. Drawing upon extensive field surveys in conjunction with critical documentary analysis, this study identifies and examines a network of seveneen worship sites dedicated to An Duong Vuong, spanning from Co Loa (Hanoi) to Thanh Hoa and Nghe An. Employing theoretical frameworks on sacred space, collective memory, and traditional creativity, the article elucidates the processes of sacralization and localization associated with this historical-legendary figure. The findings indicate that the network of sites not only embodies the dynamic interplay between history and legend but also constitutes compelling evidence of the cultural creativity and identity-forming capacity of local communities.
