Abstract
This article focuses on the study of several vocal techniques applied in the practice and performance of tenor excerpts in the operas of Giacomo Puccini, one of the leading composers of Italian verismo. By analyzing the musical characteristics, technical requirements, and performance styles of selected excerpts from renowned operas such as La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot, the article identifies core techniques including breath control (appoggio), precise diction, sound placement, legato technique, and refined dynamic management. Additionally, the study emphasizes the application of Bel canto technique, a crucial foundation that enables tenors to develop a resonant, bright, powerful, and emotionally expressive voice while maintaining vocal endurance and naturalness. Through examining the training and performance practices of renowned tenors, the article proposes several solutions to enhance the effectiveness of tenor training and the performance of Puccini’s opera excerpts within professional music education environments in Vietnam.
