Identifying Core Competencies of BIM Staff in the Design Phase of Construction Projects
Abstract
This paper identifies the core competencies required for BIM staff during the design phase of construction projects in Ho Chi Minh City. The application of BIM in the design phase demands highly skilled personnel with expertise not only in technical aspects but also in management and interdisciplinary collaboration. The study employs the word tags method to analyze data from academic literature and in-depth interviews with BIM experts in construction companies in Ho Chi Minh City. The findings identify three key competency groups: (i) Knowledge Competencies; (ii) Technical Skills; and (iii) Attitudinal Competencies. The study not only provides an overview of the competency requirements for BIM staff in the design phase but also contributes to the development of training programs and capacity-building initiatives for BIM professionals in Vietnam. This, in turn, enhances the efficiency of BIM implementation in the construction industry and optimizes the building design process.
