The role of women and solid waste management: scrap purchase - collection in Tuy Hoa, Phu Yen

Abstract

The survey on the scrap collection network in Tuy Hoa City, Phu Yen has provided a clearer view of the recycling activities, particularly plastic waste, in the context of environmental protection obligations. The survey results clearly demonstrated the main role of women in scrap collection, as evidenced by the fact that 99% of the survey respondents were women. Their working hours are not consistent with the working hours of the day, but depend on the actual conditions of the collection activities. The number of people working for more than five years is up to 87%. This shows that this is an important condition to prove that a profession exists in society but has not been officially recognized. Moreover, the majority of people working in this informal "profession" are women, considered the weaker sex, with many difficulties and barriers when trying to find a stable job with a good salary. The dual challenges confronting women in the professional realm encompass both job quality and career advancement.
