Abstract

The rapid development of computer science has been opening up many new directions of development in science and technology, including the design of construction structures such as truss systems, frame systems, bridges, etc. In this paper, the two most current potential problems in truss design, including direct analysis and structural optimization, are presented. The main advantage of direct analysis is that the nonlinear behavior of the structure is calculated and through which the resistance of the whole structure is determined. Structural optimization considered is a multi-objective optimization problem with two objective functions, namely the total weight and nodal displacement, subject to the constraints of different limit states. The design variables to be considered are the cross-sectional areas of the structural members belonging to a given set of discrete values. The Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimizer (OMOPSO) is used to solve the optimization problem. A planar truss bridge consisting of 113 bars is considered for illustration.
