Implementing the energy management system in compliance with TCVN ISO 50001:2019 to enhance energy efficiency in hospitals
Abstract
Hospitals exhibit high energy consumption compared to other commercial buildings. Efficient energy use in hospitals contributes to reducing operation costs, emissions, and environmental protection. The Law in Efficient Energy Use specifies hospitals as priority energy consumers, requiring the establishment of energy management system. This study aims to: (1) investigate the current situation of energy management in hospitals and identify significant energy uses within hospitals; and (2) to provide guidance on implementing the energy management system according to TCVN ISO 50001:2019 and propose energy-saving solutions for some significant energy uses. A typical study was conducted at 6 hospitals in Vietnam. The results revealed the advantages and disadvantages of energy management system and identified HVAC and lighting systems as the largest energy consumers in hospitals. Finally, guidelines for implementing the energy management system according to TCVN ISO 50001:2019 for hospitals were discussed and proposed.
