Assessment of the change of impervious surface area in Thanh Hoa city using Normalized Difference Built-up index
Abstract
Urbanization and population growth have caused a great change in urban land use, including an expansion of impervious surface area. This paper presents the results of the assessment of the change of the impervious surface area in Thanh Hoa city in the period 2015–2021 from Sentinel 2 MSI satellite image data. Two Sentinel 2 MSI satellite imagery in 21-12-2015 and 13-01-2021 were used to calculate the NDBI index, and then classify the impervious surface using the threshold classification method. The results show that the impervious surface area in Thanh Hoa city has a rapid increase after 5 years, from 1021.89 ha to 1840.02 ha. The results obtained in the study provide objective information for planning and rational use of urban land use/land cover.
