Abstract

This study was conducted to monitor the changes in the area of mangrove forests and the beaches behind a pile-rock breakwater section along the coast of Tran Van Thoi district in Ca Mau province. Remote sensing image analysis and field measurements were carried out to assess the changes in the mangrove forest area and the erosion/deposition of the beaches. The results showed that the mangrove forest area transitioned from a state of severe decline (7.67 ha/year) to a state of stability after the construction of the seawall (1.0 ha/year). The protected beach also experienced an accretion of between 3.5 cm and 7.0 cm over a period of one month.
