Abstract

The present work aims to assess the applicability of calcium formate (CF) as an additive for increasing the early strength of blended Portland cement by determining the effect of CF content (from 0 to 0.4%) on the properties of cement. The properties of cement determined includesthe standard water demand, setting time, compressive strength (at 1, 3, 7, 14, 28 days) and temperature change of cement pastes in the first 24h. The results show that CF did not change the standard water amount. CF reduced the initial and final setting time and this effect increased as the CF content increased, but the setting time of cement still met the requirements for cement. CF increased the early and late strength of cement and the cement strength increased with increasing the CF content. The heat measurement results also show that CF increased the rate of cement hydration. The results of the present work indicate that CF can be used to increase the early strength of Yen Bai blended Portland cement.
