The elderly’s coping of with psychological difficulties in using technological devices

Abstract

Coping with psychological difficulties in using technological devices is one way the elderly solve difficulties related to this activity. This study used the Coping Inventory for stressful situations: Situation - specific version (CISS-SSC, Endler & Parker, 1999) to survey 200 elderly people in Hanoi, aiming to clarify how they cope with difficulties in using technological devices. Study results showed that the elderly used more task-oriented coping strategies, but still employed avoidance and emotional coping. Comparisons between groups showed that older people living in urban areas who frequently used technological devices had to cope with psychological difficulties in using these devices compared to those living in rural areas. The study results from the basis for making recommendations to support older people in better coping with difficulties in using technology devices in the context of Vietnam’s national digital transformation implementation.
