Abstract

This study examined the mediating role of negative thoughts in the relationship between journal writing and anxiety. Regression analysis conducted on a sample of 1,066 Vietnamese university students indicated that negative thoughts partially mediate the connection between the frequency of journal writing and anxiety. Specifically, the frequency of journal writing was found to have a direct effect on reducing, while also indirectly mitigating anxiety by decreasing negative thoughts. These results are discussed and interpreted within the context of Pennebaker's (1985) emotional inhibition theory, self-reflection theory, and relevant psychophysiological mechanisms. The findings provide evidence suggesting that journal writing can be an effective strategy for developing mental health interventions and anxiety management programs for university students in Vietnam.
