Abstract

ABSTRACT

A laboratory model was developed to investigate the influence of the permeability coefficient of sandy soil on the factor of safety against sand boiling, Fs of diaphragm wall for deep excavation. The variation of the tests includes(1) permeability coefficient, (2) the density of sand and (3) the total head of water. The value of Fs was evaluated using several analytical methods combined with experimental results. The results revealed that 26.3% increment of the permeability coefficient of sand induced about 17.3% reduction in Fs. Last, the study also proposed a minimum Fs of 1.5-
2.0 when using the current methods.
