Abstract

The study focused on the production of fly ash and crumb rubber aggregates and their effects on the properties of cement mortar. The artificial aggregates were prepared by mixing cement, fly ash, crumb rubber, and water in the ratio of 1:1:0.05:0.25 at 50ºC for 24 hours. The artificial aggregates replaced sand at 0%, 10%, and 20% by volume. The properties of cement mortars using artificial aggregates included flow, compressive strength, density, and total voids. The flow of the mortar mixture increased as the ratio of sand replacement by rubber aggregate increased. The compressive strength of the cement mortar was also enhanced, especially for CS10 mixture at 91 days of age. In addition, the results of the density and total voids of the mortar samples improved the influence of rubber aggregate on the compressive strength of cement mortar. Based on the results obtained, this artificial aggregate with the combination of fly ash, cement, and rubber crumb can be applied as an aggregate to replace sand in cement mortar up to the usage ratio of 20% by volume.
