Planning coastal urban areas for increasing resilience to climate change, taking Quang Tri province as case study
Abstract
ABSTRACT:
The 8th Conference of the 12th Party Central Committee issued Resolution No. 36-NQ/TU dated October 22, 2018 on the Strategy for sustainable development of Vietnam's marine economy to 2030, with a vision to 2045, has determined to turn Vietnam into a strong maritime nation. Therefore, coastal cities play an important role in economic development strategies, providing livelihoods for large populations of urban and rural areas. However, according to the World Bank's report, in 2017, about 50% of urban development areas are at risk of floods, especially in the coastal secondary cities. Therefore, it is necessary to research to come up with solutions on urban structure as well as technical solutions to enhance resilience. Through the case of the coastal area of Quang Tri province, the study has identified groups of key issues that need to be solved in the region, thereby proposing groups of solutions. Solutions for the coastal area of Quang Tri have typical values to be replicated in the central coastal cities.
