PRINCIPAL MILITARY COMMANDER NGUYEN CUU VAN - LIFE AND CAREER
Abstract
Nguyen Cuu Van originated from the ranks of military generals under the Nguyen lords. He was appointed as a Commander at a very young age and later held the positions of Chief Commander and Deputy General of Tran Bien Garrison. He was the first general to lead the Dai Viet army and civilians in organizing resistance against the Siamese invasion. Additionally, he played a significant role in developing the Cu Uc region (later known as Vung Gu), which is now part of Tan An City, Long An Province. As a renowned general from the Nguyen Cuu family—a lineage of great meritorious officials under both the Nguyen lords and Nguyen emperors—Nguyen Cuu Van upheld the legacy of his distinguished ancestry. He made substantial contributions to the building, development, and protection of the nation's borders, as well as to the pioneering of the southern region of Vietnam. He also excellently carried on his family's traditions. His sons followed in his footsteps, becoming senior military officers of the Nguyen dynasty and successfully maintaining their familial and national duties. Studying the life and career of Nguyen Cuu Van not only highlights the role of the Nguyen Cuu family in the nation's construction and defense but also provides deeper insights into the development of the ancient Tan An region.
