THE ROLE OF THE SANCTIFICATION MOTIF IN VIETNAMESE LEGEND

Abstract

The sanctification motif is a distinctive motif of the legend genre. This motif marks the final fate of the character, creating a complete ending that helps establish the people's belief in immortality. It also carries significant historical values, especially the values of gratitude and reverence from the people toward heroic figures. Therefore, this motif holds an important position in the system of motifs within the legend genre. In exploring the role of the sanctification motif in Vietnamese legends, we focus on two aspects: its influence on plot construction and its role in conveying the traditional cultural values of the nation. Through this, the article aims to offer new perspectives on the study of the sanctification motif and the cultural values it brings.
