EXISTENTIAL CHARACTER IN CAN XUE’S LOVE IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM

Abstract

Can Xue is one of the prominent writers of contemporary Chinese literature. Her works demonstrate the sensibility of existentialism. In her work Love in the New Millennium, Can Xue expressed this sensibility by building a unique system of existential characters. Using some methods such as the poetics approach, biographical criticism method, and existential criticism method, we can deeply explore the characters’ world in the work from an existential perspective. The narrative features different types of existential characters: lonely characters and characters who create their own identities. Through each of these character types, we can appreciate the author’s distinctive artistic talent and the profound significance of the existential journeys faced by modern individuals.
