APPLYING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF DERIVING WORDS’ STRUCTURE IN ENGLISH TO ENRICH ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES ON POLICING
Abstract
Vocabulary plays a very important role in the process of learning foreign languages. According to Wilkins (1972), if learners do not learn grammar, they are only able to convey very few of their ideas. But if they do not have certain vocabulary, they absolutely cannot express anything in their communication. Therefore, vocabulary is a tool helping people carry out the communication successfully. Moreover, it is the foundation for developing other language skills, such as: reading comprehensive, listen comprehensive, speaking, writing. With the desire to help teachers and students overcome difficulties in teaching and learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP) when approaching with the system of professional words and terms, in this article, the authors would like to apply researches: “The structure of English deriving words from the perspective of structural method” in order to explore the structure and semantics of the word system in ESP coursebooks taught at the People’s Police University. On that basis, teachers and students easily guess and grasp the fastest semantics of the ESP word systems. Furthermore, on the scientific basis of deriving words, teachers and learners are able to create new classes of words applied in the teaching and learning process.
