The current study provides a literature review on idioms and fixed expressions and implications in teaching academic essay writing in Vietnamese context. The study’s key contribution lies in demonstrating that idioms function as salient markers of advanced L2 writing proficiency in authentic assessment contexts, while also identifying concrete challenges in assessing idioms, thereby highlighting the need to explicitly incorporate phraseological competence into L2 writing assessment criteria.
