SURVEYING THE INFLUENCE OF ENGLISH LOAN WORDS ON THE KOREAN LEARNING OF STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES - THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY
Abstract
This study aims to investigate the impact of English loan words on Korean vocabulary learning of students at the School of Foreign Languages - Thai Nguyen University. The research subjects included 120 fourth and fifth year students studying Korean at the school. Data collection tools are based on the Korean language module in the training program, learning results, tests, and language practice skills during the learning and training process of the first semester of the school year 2023-2024. Research results show that most students felt that English loan words are easy to learn (56.3%) and easy to remember (52.1%). The most difficult thing when learning English loan words is "hard to distinguish from Korean original words" accounting for 43.8%. However, the vast majority of students wanted to meet many English loan words (accounting for 70.8%) and wanted to expand their English loan vocabulary in the future (accounting for 97.9%). This study is a useful reference source for teachers and students studying Korean. From the survey results, the authors provide suggestions to help teachers and students expand their Korean vocabulary.
