Abstract

Can Xue is a contemporary Chinese writer who strongly influences world literature. Her works have demonstrated the innovations of the Avant-garde literary movement, especially the artistic techniques. Using qualitative methods such as the interdisciplinary approach method and the poetics approach method, this study delves into exploring Tan Tuyet's art of character building through Five Spice Street and Love in the New Millennium to find the "key" to decode the messages and ideas in the writer's works. The research results show that the artistic characteristics of Can Xue's character building in these two novels are expressed in some aspects, such as blurring characters, and character life hypertrophy. Thereby, the author has expressed her unique, profound perception of people and reality in the modern/ postmodern period. The article's results are also useful for the study of Tan Tuyet in general and the writer's works in Vietnam.
