MOTIVATING FACTORS AND NEW LIVELIHOOD STRATEGIES OF THE CO - TU PEOPLE IN QUANG NAM PROVINCE
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that promote and change the livelihood strategies of the Co - tu ethnic in the border areas of Tay Giang and Nam Giang districts of Quang Nam province. To achieve this, we conducted field observations, in-depth interviews, and utilized quantitative methods to process information and data. Our findings reveal that the decline in resources, particularly in the area of cultivated land, the state’s economic development support policies, and socio - cultural changes have prompted the Co - tu ethnic to alter their livelihood strategies. They have adapted by selecting crops that are suitable for the natural conditions, utilizing ethnic folk knowledge, and expanding their livestock farming in a market-oriented manner, while also incorporating science and technology. Additionally, the younger labor force has shifted towards non-agricultural activities. These changes show that the economic thinking of the Co - tu people has begun to change, gradually adapting to modern society and improving their living standards.
