SCIENCE FICTION IN GRADE 7 VIETNAMESE LITERATURE TEXTBOOKS (2018 GENERAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM) - A STUDY AND DISCUSSION

Abstract

Within the framework of educational reform, the 2018 general education curriculum for the first time incorporated science fiction - a novel and distinctive literary genre - into the teaching of Grade 7 Literature. So, this article aims to investigate science fiction stories in the three textbooks - Canh Dieu, Chan Troi Sang Tao, and Ket Noi Tri Thuc Voi Cuoc Song to clarify their characteristics, the ways to select and effectively exploit these works in the teaching and learning process in schools. This article employs content analysis and interdisciplinary research methods to clarify the issue. The research results show that science fiction accounts for a relatively significant proportion in all three textbooks, including both world and Vietnamese classic works. These texts possess outstanding value in terms of content and artistic quality, providing scientific knowledge while fostering imagination and conveying profound humanistic lessons. Based on this, the article offers several suggestions to improve the teaching and learning of science fiction works in schools.
