THE INTEGRATION OF CHATGPT INTO CHINESE LANGUAGE LEARNING FOR LANGUAGE-MAJOR STUDENTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION: BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES

Abstract

This study clarifies the benefits and challenges of language-major students when integrating the use of ChatGPT in the process of learning Chinese and provides some suggestions for using ChatGPT to learn Chinese more effectively. This study collected survey data through quantitative research (questionnaire) and qualitative research (open-ended questions, if acceptable) from 118 language-majored students (English and Chinese Language majors) who are studying Chinese at Tra Vinh University. The research results showed that ChatGPT helped learning Chinese more effectively by providing new knowledge in a short time, supporting learners to comprehensively develop many skills, helping to increase the motivation of language-majored students to learn Chinese etc. However, the problems of providing inaccurate information, the quality of answers decreasing with the frequency of use or causing users to develop a mentality of dependence and reducing the thinking ability of learners are all difficulties that many people agree with. Therefore, when using ChatGPT to learn Chinese, students need to use it selectively, avoid relying on this tool and need to combine it with other learning methods to bring the best results.
