Abstract

This study investigates the needs of students and teachers regarding the Research Methods in English course at the School of Foreign Languages, Thai Nguyen University. A convergent mixed-methods design was employed, combining questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis of curriculum learning outcomes from the English Education and English Language programs. Findings reveal that students recognize the importance of research competence but face difficulties applying theoretical knowledge in practice. Both students and teachers identified essential skills such as selecting research topics, formulating research questions, writing literature reviews, and applying research methods. However, students still lack academic vocabulary, research writing skills, and experience in structuring research reports. The analysis also shows gaps between current student competencies and expected outcomes defined in the curriculum learning outcomes. The study highlights the necessity and feasibility of developing localized, step-by-step learning materials to support students in achieving research competence aligned with program outcomes.
