HOUSEHOLD SOLID WASTE GENERATION AND MANAGEMENT IN TIEN HAI DISTRICT, THAI BINH PROVINCE
Abstract
This study aims to evaluate current situation of household solid waste (HSW) generation in Tien Hai district, Thai Binh province and its effective management solutions. The waste generation amount and characteristics were surveyed at Tay Giang, Tay Son communes and Tien Hai town. The research results show that average amount of waste is in the range of 0.50 to 0.81 kg/person/day. The total amount incurred in Tay Giang, Tay Son and Tien Hai towns are 4039 kg/day, 3653 kg/day and 3512 kg/day, respectively. HSW is classified into food residues (62-72%), plastic bags (8-11%), plastic, styrofoam, paper, metal, garden garbage (about 20%). Currently, more than 90% of HSW is treated by incineration and landfill. The management of domestic solid waste is relatively good as 100% of communes and towns throughout the district having a centralized waste treatment area and establishing a daily-life waste collection and treatment team. However, the sorting process of wastes for treatment methods has not been strickly considered, causing an low treatment efficiency. Therefore, studies are needed to accurately determine the nutritional and calorific value of solid waste to recover nutrients and energy in the treatment of HSW.
