STUDY ON ISOLATION AND STRUCTURE DETERMINATION OF SAPONINS FROM THE ROOTS OF WEIGELA FLORIDA “JEAN’S GOLD”
Abstract
Species of Weigela genus, thus Caprifoliaceae family are currently used in folk medicine, specifically in Asia. Saponins isolated from this species possess interesting biological activities such as anti-oxidant activity, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxicity. In this study, ethanolic crude extract was achieved using microwave-assisted method. Two saponin compounds were isolated from the ethanolic crude extract by various chromatographic techniques. The structures of these compounds were established as olean-12-en-28-oic acid, 3-[(O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1®3)-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1®4)]-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1®4)-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1®3)-6-deoxy-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1®2)-β-D-arabinopyranosyl)oxy]-, (3β)- (1), and olean-12-en-28-oic acid, 3-[(O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1®2)-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1®4)]-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1®4)-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1®3)-6-deoxy-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1®2)-β-D-xylopyranosyl)oxy], (3β)- (2). These compounds were previously isolated from species of the Weigela genus, thus Caprifoliaceae family.
