Abstract

With the rapid development of rooftop solar power sources in the past 5 years in Vietnam and the strong orientation of developing these sources in the future according to the Power Development Plan 8, many challenges in distribution grid operation have arisen. One of the issues is to ensure voltage tolerance when connecting to the rooftop solar power source. This paper presents methods for controlling reactive power for rooftop solar power sources, thereby helping to ensure that voltage at the point of connection (PCC) is within the allowed limits according to relevant regulations. The methods with their advantages and disadvantages are analyzed. There are three methods such as the reactive power control method with constant coefficient; the reactive power control method as a function of the active power output of solar power sources; and the method regulating reactive power as a function of voltage at the PCC point. Through analysis and evaluation, the third method is selected. Matlab/Simulink software was used to simulate and realize the effectiveness of this control method. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the method in ensuring that voltage at the PCC point is within the allowable limit.
