Abstract

Marriage is an important thing in a person's life. This cultural feature is reflected quite clearly through works of the folk literature genre. In recent times, a number of projects have raised the issue of studying the marriage customs of some ethnic groups through a number of genres such as fairy tales, proverbs, folk songs, etc. However, the study of Vietnamese marriage customs through folk jokes is still open. We use a number of operations and methods such as collecting and researching folk jokes related to traditional Vietnamese marriage customs combined with synthesis, comparison and interdisciplinary research methods to clarify the imprint of Vietnamese marriage customs through these stories. The results show that Vietnamese folk jokes reflect customs such as child marriage, polygamy, wedding challenges, in-laws, and chastity,... thereby revealing laughter that is both refreshing but also has the meaning of gentle criticism and sarcasm.
